Ludus Ragalis

In 1974 I spent much time studying elements common to Indian and European music: both know the same 12 notes, the popular scale Bilával equals the Western Major Scale. The legendary Badé Ghulam Ali Khán (1902-68) once told me that all Indian raags were variants of six basic scales, which - clear to me - were identical to the six European church modes. I thereupon embarked on a project combining two mutually contemporary techniques - European Fugue and Indian Raag: thirteen purely "Western" preludes and fugues were composed, each in a different major-scale raag, not necessarily recognisable to a Western listener, but clearly recognisable to musically educated Indian listeners. Ludus Ragalis was composed in 72 days between 25 May 1974 and 20 February 2006.
